Our House

Returning from the sunshine mall of seventies
Laurel Canyon, Graham Nash writes Our House
for Joni, himself and me in one happy hour -
peace and love and other imaginings moving
through the piano keys - and I return today from our
small-time shopping spree to pen these fourteen lines,
willing enough when singing along, but now way
beyond those dreams, and this is our home’s song:
I’ll light the fire to keep the cold from your disease
and bring flowers too to place in a vase you made
years before when life would never seem so hard,
and the evening sunshine can be a real dream of summer
when I will mow the moss and weeds of our yard
whilst humming old songs like a noise in the breeze.
