Mariani - Perpetuum Mobile

Continuing Heat

Not a new kind of phone, but the one and only 1969/70 album from Austin, Texas-based band Mariani, though it wasn’t released commercially until 2001, and whilst initially a trio including drummer Vince Mariani and ace guitarist Eric Johnson [recording then at 15 and 16 years old], there was a range of musicians, including vocalists, recording across the tracks eventually released as the whole album.

It is wonderfully of its heavy time, and the fuzzed, wah-wah guitar flashes of Johnson appeal the most – Hendrix-esque at times, as one would understand of that time, and as reflected perfectly on third track Things Are Changing – supported thunderingly by Mariani’s frenzied drumming.

Tracks 5 and 6, respectively The Unknown Path and Euphoria - the second at 11 minutes, are guitar burn-ups, whilst tracks 7 and 8, respectively Message and Windy Planet, are drum burn-ups. If you like this kind of instrumental 60s/70s’ era heat, then these with the other album scorchers are well worth standing around for warmth.
