Making Them After All These Years
Waves is the solo
eponymous album by this New Zealand band, released in 1975, and little known at
the time, or since it seems, outside that country. I have only just come across
them thanks to the net. They play a classic West Coast music, at times singing
in harmonies reminiscent of Crosby, Stills and Nash – as oft cited in what writing
there is on them – but for me they are most closely linked to America,
especially in the acoustic guitar work. Those harmonies are pretty damn pretty
and it is a sweetly sweet listen if you like this type of thing, these
repetitions as apt as one can be in describing.
A further nine excellent tracks have been released [in 2013]
from recording sessions and a planned but never realised album for 1977. It is
available as Misfit, and is more of
the lovely same, with fine guitar work found on tracks like Head Full of Stars and Jacob and El Tornado. This and the album
