Lake Street Dive - Free Yourself Up, album review

Simples

Lake Street Dive is a fine tight band, with solid songwriting, upbeat, soulful and funky by and large, but their star is singer Rachael Price. Simple as.

This album showcases all of that, opener Baby Don’t Leave Me Alone With My Thoughts driven by the bass playing of Bridget Kearney, a pumping Jackson 5-esque number, and of course they have form here. Mike Olson on synths gives it flashes of the past. Good Kisser has Price gloriously shouting her prowess over more tight beats.

And with smooching a sort of theme – two tracks anyway – Red Light Kisses is maybe the strongest track, the most obvious funked-up song, Kearney’s bass sliding forthrightly, Olson’s organ swirling sound, the vocal chorus/harmonising/call-backs all funkier still.

Calmer moments come in the shape of I Can Change which broods with pedal steel; Musta Been Something features organ swirl again, and Price soaring here and there at sweet, sweet registers.
